The markets industry gathered this week in Birmingham for the National Association of British Market Authorities Great British Market Awards 2016, regarded by many as the jewel in the crown of industry awards. At this year’s ceremony, attended by High Street and Markets Minister Marcus Jones MP, Market Place, the UK’s largest specialist market operators had cause for celebration. The company took the coveted title of ‘Best Large Specialist Market 2016’ for their delivery of a variety of markets at the Tall Ships event in Belfast in July last year. With a combined experience of Markets delivery spanning over 100 years, Market Place are known for their high quality markets. They are also increasingly celebrated for their ability to delivery large-scale events and 2015 was no exception. The judging panel made up of Jeremy Bradin, KPR Midlink, Councillor Mick Barker, NABMA President, Rob Nixon, Markets Manager, Stoke and Kirsty Flatt of Market Trade News, deliberated over a highly competitive category and awarded Market Place the title of ‘Best Large Specialist Market’ in recognition of the operational excellence and successful delivery of the market offering at the flagship event for the City of Belfast.
Working in partnership with Belfast City Council, Market Place delivered the largest event in the company’s history as part of the world-renowned Tall Ships races in Belfast. During the four day event in July last year, a team of ten Market Place managers worked for a total of 1050 hours to set up and run markets across six sites. The impressive operation incorporated 160 stalls, 40 catering locations and five bars and covered a staggering 6702 sq metres with 2500sq ft of temporary flooring to protect grassy areas.123 traders represented 28 countries with many being from Northern Ireland and the award-winning St George’s Market in the city. One of the main attractions built at significant cost to Market Place was the City Beach built in the historic Custom House Square. The attraction proved popular with visitors to the event, so much so that there were many requests for its stay to be extended. Built on a specially constructed frame and membrane and using 87 tonnes of certified sand, the beach was dressed with deck chairs, buckets and spades, beech balls and character cut outs all of which made for an authentic family seaside experience right in the heart of the city.
