As the Christmas Markets kicked off this weekend, the world stopped to watch the horrific events which took place in Paris last Friday evening. Ahead of Santa arriving at the Belfast Christmas Market this morning, the Lord Mayor visited the City Hall where he signed the book of condolences within the hall for all those affected by the Paris attacks and walked around the market to meet and speak with a number of the authentic french traders, to show his support and sorrow for recent events. At 11am this morning Market Place announced there was to be 1 minute silence in honour and remembrance of those lost in Paris this weekend and those who have been affected. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported our wishes as the market became still as a sign of respect.
Over the weekend, many may have also spotted the beautiful Belfast City Hall was transformed to display the French flag across its body as a mark of solitary to those affected by the sad recent events.
We were also joined this morning by a fantastic group of Primary School children who won a free VIP tour of the market through our video competition. Not only did they get to taste some of the great continental foods and flavours on offer but they had a lovely ride of the carousel as well as greeting Santa at the market and escorting him to his Grotto within the Christmas Market.
Santa also visited the Giving Tree where visitors to the market are encouraged to write a pledge for time, talent or treasure on the gift tags provided and hang them on The Giving Tree.
The Christmas Market will be running everyday now until 20th December and the trading times are:
Monday - Wednesday: 10am - 8pm (bars are open till 9pm)
Thursday - Saturday: 10am - 10pm (bars are open till 11pm)
